New York accent – see U Tube – ExpertVillage
In a NY accent, the point of placement is in the chin as opposed to ours that is in the back and the middle of the mouth.
Imagine smacking gum – use the jaw and the front of the bottom teeth.
1. The following words – often sounds like awften; jaw is lifted at the end; lost sounds like lawst.
a. I thought you were flawless.
b. The short dog caught the dog that cost a lot.
c. Lost boys become flawless.
2. R’s –When an R is between two vowels, hit it hard with words like very and sorry.
i. Very
ii. Marry
iii. Sherry
iv. Berry
v. scarry
b. R’s followed by a vowel – the words are combined – prepare it.
i. Pair of very
ii. Prepare it
iii. Tear it
iv. Share it
v. Year after year
3. Ing endings –drop the g Hopping
a. Skipping
b. Dancing
c. Slipping
d. Running
e. The ending of the film left one feeling like searching for life.
4. Medial T – when a t is in the middle, it sounds like a d. When the T comes between two vowel sounds or when it falls after a vowel and before an L or R, we tend to give that t a d sound. Hit the D and make it hard. All double T combinations has the hard d.
5. Pitch – lilt – in Texas accents, we usually go up at the end of the sentence so it sounds like a question, even if it is a statement. In a NY accent, the end of the sentence goes down.
6. Think about shows like Good Fellas.
7. Words like verse and voice sound the same.
What if it's like searching wouldn't it soun like ear does instead of making an oi sound?
ReplyDeleteIt is not a ear or an oi sound - more of a suhchin - your bottom teeth feel like they are being used more than the top. Thanks for the comment.
